Panasonic today announced two new additions to its LUMIX FS-Series of digital cameras, the DMC-FS7 and the DMC-FS15. The FS models, a stylish sister line of the highly-acclaimed LUMIX FX-Series, combine easy operation with a slim and sleek look, enabling both beginner and advanced users to take beautiful digital photos with a model they can slip in their pockets.

The 12.1 megapixel DMC-FS15 features a 29mm wide-angle Leica DC VARIO-ELMAR lens with a 5x optical zoom. Panasonic has enhanced the Intelligent Auto Mode (iA) on the DMC-FS15 from the previous FS models to now include AF tracking and Intelligent Exposure functions in addition to Mega O.I.S., Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Scene Selector and Face Detection. AF Tracking enables the user to “lock” the focus onto a moving subject. The camera then automatically tracks the subject as it moves, keeping it in focus without the need to hold the shutter button halfway down. Additionally, Intelligent Exposure helps capture natural-looking images by suppressing blocked shadows and blown highlights. It continually monitors the light source in the shooting environment and automatically activates the backlight compensation function if it detects the light source is behind the subject.

The 10.1 megapixel DMC-FS7 features a bright F2.8 Leica DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens with 4x optical zoom and iA mode, comprised of four functions including Mega O.I.S., Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Scene Selector and Face Detection. Like the DMC-FS15, the DMC-FS7 also include a newly-added independent iA button on top of the camera that lets the user enter directly into the mode without going into the menu.

“These new additions to the LUMIX FS-Series incorporate a number of enhanced quality and convenience features that provide consumers with simple-to-use, intuitive cameras at an affordable price,” said David Briganti, National Marketing Manager, Imaging, Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company. “By combining Leica lenses, Intelligent Auto Mode and powerful image processing with a sleek and compact design, the FS Series cameras are ideal for consumers looking to take easy, high-quality photos on the go.”

Other features of both FS models include a Venus Engine IV processor, which enables an advanced processing system and quick response times. An intelligent LCD screen detects light conditions and automatically adjusts the brightness levels for viewing in sunlight and helps to preserve battery life. The new Photo Frame mode lets the user put attractive borders around photos, so when printed, they look like postcards in picture frames. Also, the new My Scene setting lets the user assign their most frequently used Scene modes to the setting, and with a simple switch, access that scene instantly. The FS-Series is also capable of recording WVGA (848 x 480) motion pictures at 30 frames per second in 16:9 wide-screen format, as well as standard VGA (640 x 480) format.

The DMC-FS15 will be available in silver, black and blue at a suggested retail price (SRP) of $199.95. The DMC-FS7 will be available in silver, black, blue, pink and green at an SRP of $159.95. Both models will be available in late March 2009.

Casio Exilim EX-S5 / EX-S12

The final two Exilim models are in the ultra-thin category. The EX-S5 is a pretty basic point-and-shoot camera, while the EX-S12 has some of the bells and whistles found in the Z-series models above. Here are the details on both of these:

Exilim EX-S5 [specs]
10.1 Megapixel CCD
F3.1-5.6, 3X optical zoom lens, equivalent to 35.5 - 106.5 mm
Ultra-thin body comes in SIX colors: blue, black, gold, pink, purple, and silver
2.7" LCD display with 114,960 pixels
Point-and-shoot opreation, with 23 scene modes
Exilim EX-S5 Casio digital camera battery
From the you-can't-make-this-stuff-up file:
"As well as the rectangular focusing frame usually displayed on the LCD monitor, users can choose designs such as a heart or a butterfly for the frame design. When the camera is correctly focused, a beautiful heart can be displayed, and when correct focus is not achieved the heart pattern breaks up. This makes it easy to ensure correct focus, and it is fun, too."
Records movies at 848 x 480 (30 fps) with sound
SD/SDHC card slot
Uses NP-80 li-ion battery; no word on battery life
Ships in March for $180

Exilim EX-S12 [specs] - changes:
12.1 Megapixel CCD
F2.8-5.3, 3X optical zoom lens, equivalent to 36 - 108 mm
2.7" LCD display has 230,160 pixels
Exilim Engine 4.0
Even more scene modes
Exilim EX-S12 Casio digital camera battery
Same Dynamic Photo and Makeup features as the Z270/Z400
Records movies at 1280 x 720 (24 fps) with sound
Uses NP-60 li-ion battery
Comes in silver, pink, green, and black
Priced at $250

LAS VEGAS, NV, JANUARY 8, 2009 — Casio America, Inc. and its parent company, Casio Computer Co., Ltd., released some exciting details about its upcoming digital camera models today. Soon to be released are the slim, compact High Speed EXILIM models EX-FS10 and EX-FC100 featuring high-speed burst shooting faster than an SLR camera, and the EXILIM models EX-Z400, EX-Z270, and EX-S12, which make the most of Casio’s high-speed image processing engine to enable users to cut and paste moving subjects onto still backgrounds.

Casio has been a pioneer in digital cameras for over ten years. The new models maintain Casio’s long tradition of innovation and creativity. In 1995, Casio introduced the QV-10, the world’s first consumer digital camera with an LCD monitor so users could view the images they had just taken. In 2002, the company released the EX-S1, a card-sized camera so thin that it could be carried anywhere. In 2008, Casio launched the highly anticipated EX-F1 and EX-FH20, boasting high-speed burst shooting capabilities to ensure that users would never miss a crucial moment again, not to mention the ability to record high-speed movies that capture motion too fast for the human eye to perceive.

Casio’s effective use of fast digital technologies to deliver unprecedented high-speed burst shooting and high-speed image processing of these new models has exceeded all expectations of what digital cameras should be able to accomplish. These stylish cameras are the first bold step in a major transformation of the traditional definition of the photograph, offering users entirely new ways of enjoying still and moving images.

High Speed EXILIM models EX-FS10 and EX-FC100By reducing the size of the circuitry and the image sensor units, Casio has produced two very small cameras that offer a high-speed 30 shot-per-second burst rate and high-speed movies at a maximum of 1000 fps. The EX-FS10 is a card-sized camera just .64” thin, and the EX-FC100 is a compact camera that fits perfectly in the palm of the hand. These cameras also offer a number of other innovative functions including allowing the user to capture a still image while viewing the movement of their subject in slow motion and automatically selecting and saving one frame from continuous shots.

EXILIM models EX- Z400, EX-Z270, and EX-S12 Taking advantage of the high-speed image processing abilities of Casio’s state-of-the-art EXILIM Engine 4.0, which is built into these models, the new Dynamic Photo function allows the photographer to cut out the main subject of interest in an image that has just been captured and then combine it with another image to form the background. Users can also cut and paste several rapid-succession images to create a moving subject on a still background. This function makes it easy for users to create composite scenes from an image juxtaposition that exists only in virtual reality, or they can create a composite image that conveys a certain message. Casio technologies like these are creating whole new avenues of enjoyment that go far beyond mere picture-taking, delivering greater creative and viewing pleasure.

Casio has set up a special website (http://www.exilim.com/) that demonstrates many interesting ways to use the Dynamic Photo function. Following the release of the cameras, Casio will offer new services that expand the fun of the Dynamic Photo function
Also to be released at this time is the EXILIM EX-S5 — a camera with a compact body based on a new design concept — which makes high-quality photographic functionality simpler to use than ever before.

“Casio is dedicated to creating ‘out of the box’ features and new technology packed into our digital cameras,” said Bill Heuer, Vice President of Sales for Digital Imaging Division at Casio America, Inc. “We continue to be at the forefront of the digital camera market, providing new levels of convenience for the consumer taking photographs and shooting high-quality videos.”
The six new cameras will be available at retail in March. The EX-FS10, MSRP $349.99 will be available in blue, gray, red and white; the EX-FC100, MSRP $399.99 will be available in gray and white; the EX-Z400, MSRP $299.99, will be available in brown, gold and pink; the EX-Z270, MSRP $229.99, will be available in black, gray, gold and pink; the EX-S12, MSRP $249.99, will be available in silver, pink, green and black; and the EX-S5, MSRP $179.99 will be available in blue, black gold, silver, pink and purple.

Canon PowerShot A590 IS

The Canon PowerShot A590 IS is a entry-level camera that doesn't skimp on features. It offers a 4X optical zoom, image stabilization, a 2.5" LCD display, full manual controls, and a VGA movie mode. Not a bad deal for a camera selling for around $160!
I've always been a big fan of Canon's A-series cameras. Will the PowerShot A590 IS continue that tradition? Find out now in our review!

What's in the Box?
The PowerShot A590 IS has an average bundle. Inside the box, you'll find:
The 8.0 effective Megapixel PowerShot A590 IS digital camera
32MB MMCplus memory card
Two AA alkaline batteries
Wrist strap
USB cable
A/V cable
CD-ROM featuring Canon Digital Camera Solution
209 page camera manual (printed)

Canon is really the only camera manufacturer still bundling a memory card with their cameras -- everyone else just builds a paltry amount of memory into the camera itself. They include a 32MB Secure Digital card with the PowerShot A590, which holds eight photos at the highest image quality setting. That means that you'll want to buy a larger memory card right away, unless you already have one. The A590 supports numerous types of flash memory, including SD, SDHC, MMC, MMCplus, and HC MMCplus. I'd stick with the first two, as they're the most readily available, and more likely to be compatible with card readers, printers, etc -- and go for one 1GB in size. While it's worth spending a little extra for for a high speed card, there's no need to go overboard with a 300X ultra ultra extreme card.

Like most of the cameras in the A-series, the PowerShot A590 uses two AA batteries for power. The alkalines that come in the box will quickly find their way into the trash (or better yet, the recycling bin), so you'll want to pick up a four pack of NiMH rechargeables and a fast charger right away. Once you've got those installed, here's what kind of battery life you'll get out of the camera:
The PowerShot A590 is just shy of the top spot for battery life in this class (when equipped with decent NiMH batteries, that is). It offers a roughly 10% improvement over its predecessor, as well.

As you may know, I'm a big fan of cameras that use AA batteries. They're cheaper than their proprietary counterparts, and you can use off-the-shelf alkaline batteries when your rechargeables die. All of the cameras in Canon's A-series use AAs (hence the name, I'm guessing).
The PowerShot A590 has a built-in lens cover, so there's no clunky lens cap to deal with.
Just because it's entry-level, it doesn't mean that the PowerShot A590 can't have a lot of accessories.
The chart illustrates why I've long been a fan of the A-series cameras: they're very expandable. The one thing not supported here is an underwater case -- Canon offered one for the A590's predecessor, the PowerShot A570 IS.
Canon includes version 33 of their Digital Camera Solution Disk with the PowerShot A590. The first part of the Browser software that you'll probably encounter is Camera Window (pictured above), and you'll use it to download photos from your camera.
Once that's done you'll find yourself in either ImageBrowser or ZoomBrowser, for Mac and Windows respectively. The Mac version is Universal, allowing it to run at full speed on Intel-based systems. The Browser twins let you view, organize, e-mail, and print your photos. If you categorized any photos on the camera (more on this later) then that information is transferred over to the Browser software.

Panasonic's new, cheap, auto-everything compact camera

If the announcement of the new FS-series cameras from Panasonic wasn't enough for you, the company announced the Lumix DMC-LS85, too. If you have a penchant for digital cameras that run on AA batteries (and I know you people are out there), you'll want to pay attention.

The DMC-LS85 does in fact run on two AA batteries (good for about 270 shots using alkalines, 550 on NiMHs). It also has a 4x f2.8-5.9 33-132mm-equivalent lens with optical image stabilization--a rarity in a compact camera for its price of $119. It also features Panasonic's Intelligent Auto Mode (iA), which along with the Mega O.I.S I mentioned a second ago includes Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Scene Selector, and Face Detection.

You'll be able to stick one in your pocket this April in a choice of silver, black, and pink.

Apple PowerBook G4 (15-inch)

Apple PowerBook G4 (15-inch) laptop summary

The good: Beautiful sleek-and-slender design; robust software package, including Mac OS X Tiger; illuminated keyboard and scrollable trackpad; SuperDrive DVD burner.

The bad: Expensive; only 90 days of toll-free technical support.

The bottom line: The high-performance, fully loaded, simply beautiful 15-inch PowerBook G4 will satisfy students and creative professionals who can afford to sacrifice cash for style.

Specifications: Processor: Motorola PowerPC G4 (1.67 GHz) ; RAM installed: 512 MB DDR SDRAM ; Weight: 5.5 lbs ;

CNET editors' review
Reviewed by: Adrienne Robillard
Edited by: Michelle Thatcher

Buying a laptop typically demands certain trade-offs, but with the beautifully designed thin-and-light 15-inch PowerBook G4, there's no need to compromise: it delivers portability, performance, and a 15.2-inch (diagonal) display that's great for graphics work, watching DVDs, and just about anything else. Like the 17-inch PowerBook G4, this 15-inch model includes features such as a scrolling trackpad and a Sudden Motion Sensor that protects the hard drive when the laptop is dropped. In addition, the 15-inch PowerBook G4 is among the new fleet of Macs running on Mac OS X Tiger, and it ships with the iLife '05 software suite. Though the excellent software package adds significant value, on a pure hardware basis, the PowerBook G4 comes at a premium: a similarly configured ThinkPad T43, for example, costs $500 less.

The Apple PowerBook's sleek aluminum shell is hard to miss, and the 15-inch model has particularly pleasing dimensions. Measuring just 1.1 inches thick, 13.7 inches wide, and 9.5 inches deep, it is similar in size to the Portable One MX and the ThinkPad T43. At a reasonable 5.6 pounds, the PowerBook G4 weighs about average for a thin-and-light laptop--slightly heavier than the ThinkPad T43 and 0.5 pound heavier than the Portable One MX. Its 0.4-pound AC adapter makes for a total weight that's acceptable for carrying on the occasional trip.

Lift the lid of the 15-inch PowerBook G4, and you'll find the same minimalist design as on its 17-inch sibling: just a power button, a big keyboard framed by stereo speakers, and a large trackpad with a single mouse button. Unlike the lower-end iBook, the PowerBook G4 has a silver case and keyboard that do not pick up finger smudges. Though the keys are a bit shallow, they're wide, and we found them comfortable to use for long stretches of typing; we also loved the keyboard backlighting, which automatically adjusted to changes in ambient light levels. Like on other PowerBook G4s (and now iBooks, too), the generously sized trackpad lets you scroll through long documents and Web pages by dragging two fingers down the pad. The laptop's 15.2-inch (diagonal) TFT wide-screen display is adequately sized for most productivity and entertainment applications, and its vivid 1,280x854 native resolution teamed with the PowerBook's stereo speakers make it a good portable movie theater.

With two USB 2.0 ports; the rare combination of FireWire 400 and 800; a PC Card slot that accepts Type I and II PC cards; and support for DVI, VGA, S-Video, and composite video, the Apple PowerBook G4 can connect to virtually any peripheral, from digital cameras to ProTools hardware. It's equipped with Bluetooth to interface with cell phones, and you can access the Internet via 802.11g Wi-Fi radio, Gigabit Ethernet, or modem. This 15-inch PowerBook G4 also accommodates a neat slot-loading SuperDrive that plays and burns DVDs and CDs. Unlike most Windows laptops, the PowerBook G4 doesn't include a built-in media reader for flash memory cards, though the USB and FireWire ports can usually connect directly to peripherals that use card memory.

Lion Battery for the MSI Wind U100 laptop

I have had chance to review one of the new six cell MSI wind u100 battery that have recently come out for the wind and I have to say that the battery preformed well even under a heavy load. You can get the MSI wind u100 battery here;

For the Black/ White MSI wind u100 battery go here:
http://www.batteriescenter.co.uk/battery-laptop/msi-wind-u100.htm
http://www.usa-batteries.com/laptop/msi-wind-u100.htm

There was a discount MSI wind u100 battery 4400mAh, which will give you a 30% discount. The price of the battery before the discount is 117.3 (US) and 73 (GBP).

The following is a review of the 6 cell, 4400 mHa replacement battery for the MSI Wind U100 Netbook.

Condition Value
Temperature 18 Degrees Celcius
Operating System Windows XP SP3 (fully updated)
Screen Brightness 100.00%
Bluetooth ON but not in use
Wireless DW1490 Powered ON and in use
BIOS MSI 1.09 BIOS

MSI wind u100 battery Running Time
The running time of the MSI wind u100 battery was recorded, under conditions stated earlier, Typical usage is as follows; web browsing, Office Software, Image manipulation Software and anti virus software. All of these softwares were used during the tests. We didn’t run games as Netbooks are not intended as gaming machines. Times were recorded using a timer program on a desktop PC and were recorded from when the power button was pressed up until the compute refused to run, ie when windows forced it into hibernation mode. The results are as follows;
The Lion MSI wind u100 battery lasted 6:10:51

Battery Eater Running Time
Battery Eater is a program for windows which disables all power saving features, enables all devices and increases output of all devices to 100%. It is unlikely that you will use your Wind in this mode but it is a good bench mark for batteries.

Chemistry: LI-ION
Capacity: 4400mAh
Volt: 11.1V
Color: White/Black
Dimension: 205*55*32mm
Net Weight: 440g

Packaging and Mechanical
The MSI wind u100 laptop battery came very well packaged and you would be very unlucky if it was damaged during transit. The mechanical side of the MSI wind u100 battery seems to have been done very well, the battery fits perfectly and is secured in an identical way to the stock battery. Unlike other third party batteries I have bought, the battery is not loose when installed, is not difficult to push into the slot and was exactly the same as installing the stock battery. The Netbook is still comfortable when used on your lap as the battery doesn’t stick out that much, full marks for this.

How to Get the Best Price on a Memory Card for a Digital Camera

4GB High Speed SD Memory Card8GB High Speed SD Memory Card4GB High Speed TF TransFlash micro SD Memory Card

With all the different digital camera memory cards out there and places to buy them, you may be wondering if you are getting the best deal. Here's how to get the best deal on a memory card.

Step1
The first important thing to know is that not all digital cameras will work well with all brands of memory cards even if it is the same format. Why this is I'm not sure but I've had this experience with my camera already. It is a good idea to find out if other brands of cards will work before you buy and if you are not sure, be sure you can return the open package if it doesn't. My advice, bring the camera with you to the store if you are unsure and have the sales person open it for you so there is no issue returning. You may have to actually buy it first but at least you'll have a witness that works there that it just didn't work for you.

Step2
Compare online prices before purchasing. Very often online retailers will offer lower prices online than in their store. If you're very lucky, they'll offer free shipping as well.

Step3
Ebay and Craigslist are great places to buy memory cards if you know exactly what you are looking for. Returning these cards may be difficult so keep that in mind before purchasing. If you buy a used card, it is very possible that the life of that card will not be very long.

Step4
Check your local newspaper and online coupon websites for deals. Some retailers will actually match their competitors prices. Bring the circular with you if you find a good deal somewhere else.

Step5
If you are purchasing several items in the store, do not forget to haggle a little bit. Many of these salespeople are getting commissions and your sale directly affects their paycheck. Salespeople are desperate these days to make a sale so there is a good chance that you will get a deal. Perhaps even something for free.

Step6
If you have good credit, some stores will offer you a discount if you apply for their credit card . If you are purchasing a lot of stuff, then this discount may pay off. Be sure to pay your balance in full if you decide to go this route.

How to Transfer Photos From a Digital Camera

Do you feel like throwing your new camera against a wall? You are not alone. While it is not technically difficult to transfer photos from a digital camera, the process is often not easy for some. Whether your software fails to work properly or your computer locks up, one or more of the following tips can help navigate you through the process.

Step1 Install your digital camera software before you try to transfer photos. Install the accompanying digital camera software first before attempting to connect the camera to the computer via an USB port. Even if you elect to use a different photo editing program, the accompanying CD may include needed software components for your PC. Additionally, check the camera manufacturer's website for updated software and camera drivers.

Step2 Install your photo editing software of choice as it may be designed to import photos from a digital camera. When connecting the camera to the computer you may be prompted by the software, or your operating system, as to how to handle the photos).

Step3 Select the lowest compression (fine) or highest resolution (RAW or JPEG format) on your camera prior to taking photos and before transferring them. This will provide you with the highest quality images which can be compressed for size in photo editing software. Adjust this setting if low resolution (such as for email) is desired.

Step4 Turn the camera on and plug the USB cord into the camera and an open USB slot on the computer. Follow the prompts from your computer. If no prompts are given, look under the "My Computer" icon (or equivalent) and look for your camera and files (designated by a Drive Letter). These files can be copied and pasted onto your hard drive.

Step5 USB memory card reader Try a memory card reader for a fast and easy way to transfer photos from a digital camera. Simply take the memory card out of the camera and place it in the slot. Follow the prompts in Step 4. Memory Card Readers may be found equipped with the computer, built into some printers or purchased separately and plugged into a USB port.

Step6 Uninstall pre-existing camera software, including web cams, if problems still occur. The conflict may lie with another camera-related program. After you install the new digital camera software and get it working properly, then try to reinstall older programs to get both to work.

Tips & Warnings
Use USB 2.0 technology for faster results as you transfer photos from a digital camera. This upgrade, if needed, requires an easy to install USB card or USB hub (multiple USB ports), widely available in computer supply stores.

Q:The original Dell battery of my Dell XPS M1210 laptop is Dell XPS M1210 Battery li-ion, I want to buy an extra battery. There are compatible Dell XPS M1210 Battery which are even has higher capcity than the original Dell XPS M1210 Battery , Can I use them?

RE: If the Dell XPS M1210 Battery pack has the same voltage as the original one, and there's only an amperage difference, there should be no problem with using compatible batteries.Besides, the replacement battery is Cheaper than the original Dell laptop battery

Q:When replacing a lithium ion battery in a Dell laptop, is it ok to use a battery with a lower mAh than the battery that came with the laptop?I know it wont last as long, I just want to make sure it wont hurt the laptop.

RE: If the battery is identical in any other way beside the cumulative charge (mAh) there should not be a problem. In most cases the manufacturers make changes between batteries for different products, especialy if the products are from different levels.

Why buy Dell?
Unlike the Fujitsu, Sony, Acer, HP, and other models under consideration Dell provides the best balance of cost, performance, and quality in my eyes. Like I've said before, I absolutely hate their ugly plain grey laptops, but these new restyled Inspiron systems are very pleasing to both look at and use. I've also been very happy with nearly every aspect of my XPS2 system.

If you're a college student or someone looking to get a laptop for college it's important to read this paragraph. One of the biggest reasons for my brother to buy a Dell is because of all the agreements they have with his college and the fact that there is a service depot right on campus! If you're a college student you can't ask for any better than that. Also, when it comes to warranty plans Dell has the best offers through their Educational/Employee Purchase Program (EPP), especially on a 4 year plan. It's far more affordable than any other competitor under consideration and the on-site service with the warranty is great. I've spoken highly of Sony's service before, but not even their 5 day motherboard battery terminal repair on my GRZ630 can compete with a technician fixing a system onsite so you're not without your computer for a while. Another plus is that it's not exactly easy to deal with UPS depending on where you're living at college (dorm, apartment, etc.). Onsite makes things much easier, and for the cost through EPP it's highly reasonable.

If you do not want a warranty or are not going to use this system for college, it is a good idea to catch one of those big coupon deals that come out through the Dell Home section. I'm not particularly fond of warranties myself, but during college it's a big deal to have a constantly functioning system for me so I have no choice. Another important option is to check with your credit card company to see if they extend the warranty coverage of products you buy. This is becoming more and more common with credit cards and is a good way of avoiding paying a premium for extended warranty coverage when it's not a high concern.

Where to buy?
You can only buy new and factory refurbished Dell systems from Dell.com. You can then select which division to buy from. Your college or employer should have a special member ID and link to get you access to EPP if you wish to buy from there. If you want a used system you can use the Dell outlet, EBay, or check local ads and college campuses to see if there are advertisements of systems for sale. I sold my GRZ630 very quickly by just using flyers at my college campus. It is not advisable to buy new Dell systems from EBay because they're normally scams or you'll end up paying more to buy there.

Like I've said above if you're looking to buy with a warranty you should use EPP because of their 12% discounts effective when you buy a 3 or 4 year plan. If you're not interested in the warranty you should buy using a good Dell Home coupon and try to use a credit card that expands the warranty on its own. If you really need to save money don't forget that Dell Financial Services will offer a 2% discount on your purchase if you get to the credit card select screen and chose to sign up with them instead. However, I must stress that I highly advise NOT using Dell Financial Services because of their absurd interest rates, confusing terms, and complicated website/contact system. Take advantage of this discount only if you already have cash on hand and can pay off the system before they get the chance to charge you interest.

What's the best battery?

Battery novices often brag about miracle batteries that offer very high energy densities, deliver 1000 charge/discharge cycles and are paper-thin. These attributes are indeed achievable but not on one and the same battery pack.

A certain battery may be designed for small size and long runtime but has a limited cycle life. Another pack may be built for durability and is big and bulky. A third may have high energy density and long durability but is made for a special application and is too expensive for the average consumer. A lithium-based battery can be designed for maximum energy density but its safety would be compromised.

Battery manufacturers are aware of customer needs and offer packs that best suit the application. The mobile phone industry is a good example of this clever adaptation. Here, small size and high energy density reign in favor of longevity. Short service life is not an issue because a device is often replaced before the battery is worn out.

Below is a summary of the strength and limitations of today's popular battery systems. Although energy density is paramount, other important attributes are service life, load characteristics, maintenance requirements, self-discharge costs and safety. Nickel-cadmium is the first rechargeable battery in small format and forms a standard against which other chemistries are commonly compared. The trend is towards lithium-based systems.

Nickel-cadmium - mature but has moderate energy density. Nickel-cadmium is used where long life, high discharge rate and extended temperature range is important. Main applications are two-way radios, biomedical equipment and power tools. Nickel-cadmium contains toxic metals.

Nickel-metal-hydride - has a higher energy density compared to nickel-cadmium at the expense of reduced cycle life. There are no toxic metals. Applications include mobile phones and laptop computers. NiMH is viewed as steppingstone to lithium-based systems.

Lead-acid - most economical for larger power applications where weight is of little concern. Lead-acid is the preferred choice for hospital equipment, wheelchairs, emergency lighting and UPS systems. Lead acid is inexpensive and rugged. It serves a unique niche that would be hard to replace with other systems.

Lithium-ion - fastest growing Lithium-ion battery system; offers high-energy density and low weight. Protection circuit are needed to limit voltage and current for safety reasons. Applications include notebook computers and cell phones. High current versions are available for power tools and medical devices.

Table 1 summarizes the characteristics of the common batteries. The figures are based on average ratings at time of publication. Lithium-ion is divided into three versions: The traditional cobalt that is commonly used in cell phones, cameras and laptops; the manganese (spinel) that power high-end power tools and the new phosphate that competes head-on with spinel. Lithium-ion polymer is not listed as a separate system. Its unique construction performs in a same way to cobalt-based lithium-ion.

Casio Exilim EX-S100

Just as how the EX-Z3 was the first ultracompact from Casio to bring a telescopic optical zoom lens into a slim form factor, the EX-S100 heralds the use of a ceramic lens (Lumicera) for the firm's ultraslim EX-S series. Like how Canon managed to reduce the profile of its IXUS series with high-refractive glass elements, Casio's uses Lumicera which sports a higher refractive index compared with glass. The manufacturer claims this allows the profile of the new lens system to be reduced by approximately 20 percent. As such, the new EX-S100 measures just 16.7mm, or 6mm slimmer than the EX-Z30/40.

The Skinny On Lumi

For a model that features a telescopic lens, the EX-S100's profile of 16.7mm is nothing to be sniffed at. It even edges out Sony's wafer-thin DSC-T11 by the smallest of margins (0.3mm), a fact made even more remarkable when you consider that the Cyber-shot's lens mechanics are vertically oriented internally, and never protrude from the camera's surface.

There are, however, some limitations with the new material used. First of all, most camera buffs will be quick to spot the relatively "slow" lens with an aperture rating of F4.0 to F6.6. This is a far cry from the F2.8-F4.9 that the rest of the Exilim EX-Z series feature. For the uninitiated, this presents a few problems such as image noise (from the need to raise ISO sensitivity), blurred images (from the use of slower shutterspeeds) or--in extreme cases--even both.

In terms of design, the Casio EX-S100 is finished in typical Exilim fashion. The trademark metallic finish and beveled edges remain, retaining the brand's affiliation with class. Still, unlike previous models, the front of the EX-S100 is virtually unmarked apart from the Japanese manufacturer's name and Exilim tag--that also doubles as a finger hook. There are none of the characteristic markings found on the edges of the lens and only concentric circles remain.

In contrast, the rear of the unit adheres to a rectangular theme; buttons are either shaped like a rectangle or a normal square. As with most diminutive units, the layout of controls is cramped to the right of the unit. Fortunately, the tactile feel of the navigation pad and button is good.

Having produced so many diminutive shooters, the Japanese manufacturer has ironed out most of the quirks with such designs. To provide better grip the metallic eyelet is angled to the back, allowing the thumb to better balance the whole camera. The earlier complaint which plagued the initial EX-S series with regard to the confusion between shutter and power-on switches has also been addressed. The on-off button is now recessed, leaving only the shutter to bulge at the top. If you're worried about having difficulty accessing the sunken switch, Casio has also allowed the playback and capture controls to power up the shooter.

In Use

In our tests, we found the EX-S100's performance to be fairly good and features to be surprisingly plenty. In terms of spontaneity, the unit went head-to-head with the IXUS 40 we just tested, powering up in just over a second with the startup sound and image disabled. For shot-to-shot intervals without flash, the camera managed 1fps for three frames when using internal memory and four frames with a 66x SD card. With the flash enabled, the separation between shots expectedly increased to 3 seconds for the flash to recharge.

The zoom mechanism was reasonably quiet. As with the IXUS 40, we'd have preferred if there were more discrete steps between focal length; the EX-S100 has only six such gradations in place. The autofocusing (AF) system was mostly peppy, taking about a second for situations with adequate lighting. However, the lack of a focus-assist lamp prevented the Exilim from performing well in dim situations. And like most compact cameras, low-contrast scenes proved to be the EX-S100's downfall. On the upside, the EX-S100 provided a manual focus option which somewhat alleviated the conditions mentioned above.

For image quality, the Exilim delivered mostly respectable photos. The color tones were pleasing and metering was generally spot on. Although the lens on the EX-S100 is already at a rather small aperture setting, the camera still exhibited slight purple fringing when shot wide open. Stopping the lens further down would severely limit the camera's flexibility as highlighted above. There was also some clipping of highlights.

While the slim shooter allows sensitivity settings of up to ISO 400, we'd recommend staying with ISO 200 and below if you intend to print your images. Image noise at ISO 400 resulted in slightly murky colors. If ISO 400 is a must, which may happen more frequently with the camera's relatively slow lens, a noise filtration program worked well with our sample of photos.
The automatic white balance preset did well in a variety of lighting conditions and, unlike most cameras, did not exhibit any strange color casts.

The Verdict

With a sticker price of S$0 (US$0), the EX-S100 also inherits the Exilim's "exhilarating" price tag. For a 3-megapixel shooter, we find it hard to justify such a purchase. However, the popularity of the Sony DSC-T1 has proved us wrong before. So if style and money go hand-in-hand for you, this slender shooter should be right up your alley.

Canon EOS Digital Rebel (EOS 300D) Review

CANON EOS-300D Digital Camera

On 20th August 2003 Canon surprised many people (not least us) when it announced its $899 / €1,099 EOS 300D (Digital Rebel). This digital SLR based on the EOS 10D's superb six megapixel CMOS sensor and image processor in an inexpensive consumer body similar to the film EOS-300. This camera is designed to take the prosumer end of the digital camera market by storm, everyone is fully aware of the image quality of the EOS 10D (considered by many as the benchmark six megapixel digital SLR), and so a consumer priced digital SLR based on the same sensor is irrefutably attractive to anyone who would have previously considered an 'all in one' prosumer digital cameras.

This camera is probably the most fundamentally important step for digital SLR's since the introduction of the Nikon D1. It will place digital SLR's into the hands of consumers (with a moderate budget) and will probably also have a very strong negative effect on the $1,000 prosumer digital camera market. Especially considering that the Kit price which includes the new EF-S 18 - 55 mm (3x) lens costs just $100 / €100 more.

The EOS 300D's plastic body is just one of the elements used to reduce the cost of the camera, others include the use of a pentamirror in the viewfinder instead of a pentaprism, a reduction of features (although I feel that much of this is simply firmware crippling) and a shifting of manufacturing from Japan to Taiwan. Additionally Canon say that they have altered the production process of the CMOS sensor to reduce costs.

To give the camera more consumer appeal Canon has also replaced the EOS 10D's neutral image parameters with a new default set called 'Parameter 1' which defines Contrast, Saturation and Sharpness as +1. Adjustment to Contrast and Saturation have the same power as the EOS 10D, however the EOS 300D's sharpness is twice as strong as the EOS 10D. Thus the EOS 300D's "Parameter 1" is the same as Contrast +1, Saturation +1, Sharpness +2 on the EOS 10D. The EOS 10D's 'Standard' setting is called 'Parameter 2' on the EOS 300D.

In addition to this the EOS 300D is the first Canon digital SLR to support a new lens called the EF-S (S = short back focus), this has the same mount and electrical contacts as an EF lens but has a rear element which fits further into the camera allowing it to be closer to the image sensor. The lens elements can also be reduced in size as the imaging circle does not need to be as large, thus EF-S lenses should be smaller and lighter than their 35 mm equivalents. Note that EF-S lenses can only be used on the EOS 300D (so far) as no other EOS camera supports the EF-S mount.

Review Update: February 2004
The original version of this review was based on a late pre-production EOS 300D, we have since received a final production camera and have updated and verified various sections of the review to ensure our results accurately reflect those of the production camera.

APPLE powerbook g4 battery Buying Guide

Here's What You Should Consider Before Purchasing a APPLE powerbook g4 battery:

Lithium APPLE powerbook g4 battery are interchangeable between any of the different processor speeds. An A1012 battery will work in a 500 MHz PB as well as a 1 GHz PB. The main difference between the model numbers is the battery's capacity.

Li-Ion batteries have a 300 to 500 cycle lifetime. Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.3 and on) allows you to monitor the number of cycles on a battery using the System Profiler. Try to avoid a used battery that has a very high number of cycles on it.

A new APPLE powerbook g4 battery should be able to play a DVD for about 2 and a half hours. A good used battery should be able to play a DVD for at least an hour and a half. A used battery that plays a DVD for about an hour and a half will probably operate for over 2 hours under "normal" operating conditions (this is just an educated guess based upon my experience).

Li-Ion batteries tend to lose about 15% capacity each year, depending upon storage conditions. Try to avoid purchasing a battery that is more than 5 years old.

Be cautious if you're considering a battery where the listing doesn't provide any test data. It's a simple matter to test the battery and provide operating conditions and run time in the listing.
Be cautious when a battery listing makes claims like "holds full charge" or "all 4 lights illuminate" . As I stated above, this means virtually nothing regarding the health of the battery.

APPLE PowerBook G4 Battery buying guide:

Li-Ion batteries combine the best qualities of alkaline batteries with the best qualities of rechargeable batteries. Li-ion batteries provide constant voltage during discharge and do not suffer from the memory effect that plague Ni-Cd batteries. Li-ion batteries also provide the highest available energy density of any available battery technology (i.e. provides more power per ounce as compared to NiMH or NiCad) Li-Ion batteries also have a low self-discharge rate (about 5% per month) compared to Nickel Metal Hydride (about 30% per month) or Ni-Cd (about 20% per month). A little known characteristic of Li-Ion battery technology is that Li-Ion batteries lose approximately 15% usable capacity each year (depends upon storage temperature). Because of their characteristics, PowerBook batteries can operate for between 300-500 cycles and last for about 5 years from the manufacture date.
